Overview

Employees in this class perform a variety of law enforcement duties in the area of patrol, civil paper processing, educational, crime prevention, and community service. Work includes patrolling a geographic region within the County during a shift in a patrol car; preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime; helping victims; transporting inmates; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; testifying in court;

and executing related assignments. Duties may also include administering the D.A.R.E. Program within the County Schools; or performing the duties associated with a K-9 officer; or serving as the evidence custodian or serving as Court Bailiff. Work involves frequent public contact requiring tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed under the direction of or in conjunction with the Deputy Sheriff Corporal and is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion of handling incidents or activities.

Responsibilities
  • Patrols a geographic region of the County to detect and deter crime; respond to calls for assistance; conduct preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints; detect unusual conditions; and may maintain surveillance for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; determines the true nature of situations and takes appropriate legal or persuasive action.
  • Serve criminal papers such as warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, orders of forfeiture, and commitment papers; locate people to serve papers, explain briefly the meaning of the papers, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Serve civil process papers such as civil summons, magistrate summons, notice of rights, subpoenas, and court orders related to child support, child custody, and domestic violence; remains on scene as needed until civil process is completed.
  • Perform investigations of accidents and crimes; collect evidence, secure crime scenes, and may serve as the evidence custodian; conduct tasks assigned by Investigators; arrest and process suspects.
  • Prepare case files and materials for court; attend court to serve as a witness and provide evidence when necessary.
  • Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; provide information to the general public.
  • Conduct commercial and residential property security checks.
  • Regulate and direct vehicular traffic at busy times or during malfunctions or accidents; maintain order at public gatherings.
  • Administer the D.A.R.E. program within County schools; prepare lesson plans, conduct lessons, and organize public interest events related to the program.
  • May serve as School Resource Officer providing security to the school environment and participating in presentations; work with staff on disciplinary issues.
  • May serve as a K-9 officer; respond to canine search calls; train and care for the canine.
  • May serve as Court Bailiff providing courtroom security; call court into session; ensure judge’s security and other needs; coordinate with juries and escort inmates to and from the courtroom.

  • Perform related duties as required and engage in special duties, critical incident activities, and disaster response as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the operations, functions, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies relating to arrest, search and seizure, and traffic control.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the criminal and civil papers issued by the courts and the practices involved in serving them.
  • Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the geographic layout of the County, including locations of roads, important buildings, and landmarks.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics.
  • Skill in operating a patrol car under high-speed conditions and in inclement weather.
