General Manager - Civil Construction & Site Development

We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our civil construction and site development operations. The role is responsible for overall business performance, delivering profitable projects on time and to specification, maintaining the highest safety and quality standards, and building strong client and subcontractor relationships. The General Manager will provide strategic direction, manage operations and finances, and develop the team to support sustainable growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for civil construction and site development activities, aligning operations with company goals.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including project delivery, resource allocation, scheduling and equipment management to ensure projects are completed on time, on budget and to specification.
  • Manage financial performance: prepare budgets, monitor P&L, control costs, approve major expenditures and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
  • Ensure strict compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations; promote a positive safety culture and lead incident response and investigations.
  • Lead business development activities including client relationship management, tendering, estimating and contract negotiation to win and retain work.
  • Recruit, mentor and manage senior staff and site teams; create development plans, set performance objectives and build a high-performing workforce.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers and stakeholders to ensure quality, timely delivery of materials and services and resolve disputes effectively.
  • Implement quality assurance processes and continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce rework.
  • Oversee equipment fleet maintenance, utilization and procurement planning to support project needs.
  • Identify and manage project risks; implement mitigation strategies and ensure appropriate insurance and bonding are maintained.
  • Report regularly to the board/owners on operational performance, project status, financial metrics and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in civil construction or site development, with at least 3 years in a senior management or General Manager role.
  • Proven hands-on experience in excavation, civil construction and site development projects.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing budgets, P&L responsibility, estimating and contract administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, multi-site teams and manage subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations and best practices in construction.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Proficiency with project management and estimating software and standard business tools (MS Office).
  • Valid drivers license; ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, high attention to detail and a commitment to quality and client satisfaction.
