The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.
Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
Reporting to the Correctional Programs Director, this position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling.
Key Duties Included- Communicate effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
- Defend oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
- Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
- Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
- Train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff regarding their duties and responsibilities.
- Account for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.
Salary Grade Range: $39,244.00 - $68,679.00 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required.
Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred- Documented knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
- Documented knowledge of the techniques of supportive counseling, interviewing, job placement, and employment possibilities.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.
