SCHEDULE:MON - THURS 3:30pm - 2am, FRIDAYS AS NEEDED GENERAL PURPOSE
The Wood Rough Mill Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring rough mill equipment used to process lumber into dimensioned components for manufacturing. This position ensures material is cut accurately and efficiently while meeting quality standards, production requirements, and safety expectations. The Rough Mill Operator works as part of a manufacturing team and supports continuous improvement efforts to maximize productivity and minimize waste.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Operate rough mill machinery including rip saws, crosscut saws, gang saws, chop saws, straight-line saws, and other wood-processing equipment.
- Inspect lumber for defects, grade requirements, dimensions, and quality specifications prior to processing.
- Set up and adjust machinery to achieve required dimensions and production standards.
- Monitor machine performance and make adjustments as necessary to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Measure and verify cut parts using tape measures, gauges, calipers, and other measuring devices.
- Sort, stack, and stage processed materials according to production schedules and work orders.
- Remove defective materials and identify opportunities to maximize lumber yield and reduce waste.
- Conduct routine machine cleaning and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Report equipment malfunctions, quality issues, and safety concerns to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
- Maintain accurate production records and material tracking documentation as required.
- Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and company operating procedures.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Cross-train in related departments and equipment operations as needed.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with housekeeping standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support business objectives.

Education/Experience- One of the following is required: (1) High school diploma or its equivalent (GED for example), (2) work experience which demonstrates performance competency
- Previous manufacturing, woodworking, lumber processing, sawmill, rough mill, or related work experience demonstrating the ability to perform job requirements successfully.
- Basic math skills, including counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and measurement calculations.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret production schedules, work orders, specifications, and cut lists.
- Proficient in the use of measuring devices including tape measures, rulers, calipers, and gauges.
- Knowledge of wood species, grain patterns, defects, and lumber grading principles preferred.
- Ability to safely operate and troubleshoot woodworking machinery.
- Ability to identify quality concerns and make appropriate process adjustments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Ability to work cooperatively within a team and support production goals.
- Demonstrated willingness to adapt to changing priorities and production demands.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Understanding of workplace safety requirements and safe material handling practices.
