A Living Donor Coordinator manages the entire living organ donation process, acting as a crucial liaison between the donor, recipient, and a multidisciplinary medical team, handling everything from initial donor screening, education, and psychosocial support to coordinating complex medical evaluations, facilitating consent, overseeing surgical prep, and ensuring post-donation follow-up, while maintaining regulatory compliance and providing empathetic support to navigate the emotional complexities of donation.
Key Responsibilities- Donor Assessment and
Education:
Screens potential donors, provides comprehensive education on transplantation, coordinates extensive medical/psychosocial testing, and helps manage the donor's physical and emotional journey. - Team
Collaboration:
Works closely with surgeons, nephrologists, social workers, dietitians, and other specialists to develop and adjust care plans. Coordination:
Manages all logistics, including scheduling appointments, lab work, imaging, facilitating consent, and coordinating pre- and post-operative care for donors. - Support and Communication:
Serves as the primary point of contact, offering support, reassurance, and education to donors and families before, during, and after donation, especially when delivering difficult news (e.g., donor unsuitability). - Documentation & Compliance:
Ensures accurate, timely documentation and adherence to strict federal (e.g., UNOS/OPTN, CMS) and hospital regulations. Advocacy:
Acts as an advocate for the donor, ensuring their well-being, rights, and understanding throughout the process. - Essential Skills & Traits:

- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of practice required.
- CCTC preferred.
- Adheres to hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment through communication, interpersonal relationships and team building.
- Maintains pre-transplant charts and ensures regulatory documentation; documents the patient's plan of care and maintains an interdisciplinary approach to pre-transplant care. Uses the transplant navigator in Wake One and keeps it updated as the patient progresses; works to reduce paper documentation so the EMR is complete and accessible to caregivers.
- Coordinates pre-transplant patient education and evaluation; presents patients to the Selection Committee for transplant listing consideration.
- Assumes responsibility for on-call duties and coordinates transplant information in collaboration with the attending surgeon.
- Serves as liaison with regional dialysis centers and nephrology offices for referrals, education, and pre-transplant follow-up; maintains regular communication regarding patient status during evaluation.
- Maintains exemplary customer service, responds to questions, solves problems, and upholds a professional image and positive relationships with coworkers and physicians.
- Engages in self-development to maintain professional knowledge and credentials.
