Job Summary:
A registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Health System is responsible for the practice of nursing according to the rules and regulations defined by the state's Nurse Practice Act, Erlanger's Models of Care/Practice, policies and procedures. The nurse delivers patient care as assigned, supervises other qualified staff to whom care is delegated, and exercises independent judgment. The nurse addresses the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of the patient and coordinates the plan of care with other healthcare professionals.
The nurse participates in and completes all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Erlanger Health System.
All bedside nurses will be placed on a matrix system, which includes five core competencies:
Customer-Focus;
Cost-Effective Care;
Communication;
Competent Care and Compassionate Care, plus quality performance indicators that may be organizational and/or unit-based. This matrix guides nurses based on the Benner Model of novice to expert, and is used to note the RN's engagement, advancement and professional development. The professional nurse provides safe and effective patient care using evidenced-based best practices, communicates effectively through hand-off and bedside shift reports, maintains a safe therapeutic environment, performs comprehensive assessments, responds to abnormal data, anticipates emergencies, builds relationships with patient and family, documents accurately, completes population-specific mandatory education, provides culturally competent care, and participates in unit-based performance improvement activities.
The nurse supports an environment of teamwork and safety by coordinating with the interdisciplinary team and adapting to staffing needs.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Utilizing hand-off communication and bedside shift reports to communicate with the healthcare team.
- Maintaining patient safety by adhering to hospital policies and identifying risks.
- Documenting assessments and responses to diagnostic data clearly and accurately.
- Developing a care plan in collaboration with patients and families; coordinating resources to meet patient needs.
- Identifying changes in patient condition that may affect staffing or safety and communicating them promptly.
- Contributing to a healthy work environment through professional behavior and conflict resolution.
- Completing required education and unit competencies; supporting evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrating time management, punctuality, and scheduling flexibility to meet patient care needs.

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. - Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Prior experience in the delivery of patient care in a similar care setting.
License/Certification/Registration
- Required:
Current licensure/privileges to practice nursing in the state of employment. BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained ongoing thereafter. ACLS required within 6 months and maintained ongoing thereafter. PALS required within 6 months and maintained ongoing thereafter. TNCC or comparable education within 1 year and maintained ongoing thereafter. De-escalation training/certification (example: CPI) within 6 months and maintained ongoing thereafter.
NIHSS required prior to completion of departmental orientation and maintained ongoing thereafter. - The Nurse Licensure Compact will not change how to obtain or renew a North Carolina license. However, North Carolina licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-North Carolina residents.
