Registered Nurse PACU at Western Carolina Surgery Center Preoperative Duties
  • Patient Assessment:
    Conduct thorough preoperative assessments to collect patient medical histories, vital signs, and current medications.
  • Patient

    Education:

    Educate patients and their families on the surgical process, postoperative care instructions, and any necessary preparations.
  • Medication Administration:
    Administer prescribed medications, including preoperative sedatives and antibiotics, in accordance with physician orders and best practices.
  • Infection Control:
    Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
  • IV Line Management:
    Establish and maintain intravenous (IV) lines as required, and monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Collaboration:

    Collaborate closely with the surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth flow of preoperative preparations.
Postoperative Duties
  • Recovery Care:
    Provide postoperative care to patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), monitoring vital signs, pain levels, and overall well-being.
  • Patient Advocacy:
    Advocate for patients' comfort and safety, managing pain and addressing any immediate postoperative concerns.
  • Assessment:
    Continuously assess patients for signs of complications or adverse reactions, taking prompt action as needed.
  • Medication Management:
    Administer postoperative medications, including pain management and antiemetics, while closely monitoring their effects.
  • Documentation:
    Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, documenting all care provided, observations, and patient responses.
  • Discharge Planning:
    Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patients are ready for discharge and providing discharge instructions.
Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Licensure/Certification
  • BLS and ACLS Required
  • Current RN license in the state of North Carolina
Required Experience
  • Previous experience in a preoperative and postoperative nursing role.
  • Excellent Communication:
    Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues.
  • Team Player:
    Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, adapting to a fast-paced surgical environment.
