Job Overview
The Department of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF) seeks Registered Nurses for specialized justice-involved treatment units in state psychiatric hospitals in Butner, North Carolina. This position provides compassionate, whole‑person care for individuals with complex mental health, substance use, developmental, and neuro‑medical needs.
Responsibilities- Develop, implement, and evaluate individual patient care plans.
- Administer medications and monitor physiological responses.
- Communicate patient information effectively, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Provide direct supervision to licensed and non‑licensed staff during assigned shifts.
- Assist in transfers and coordination with other units (AAU, CAU, CTU, FSU, GSU, MPU, SAU).
- Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
- Valid CPR certification, required within 60 days of appointment.
- Advanced Physical Skills certification through the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Preferred experience with justice‑involved populations and psychiatric care.
- Knowledge of medications and their physiological effects.
- Ability to independently plan and evaluate patient care plans.
Salary Range: $61,177.00 – $91,767.00. Recruitment Range: $70,000.00 – $88,348.00.
Sign‑On Bonus (eligible for Nursing Department only, State Psychiatric Hospital positions, 1/1/2026‑8/31/2026): $35,000 total – $15,000 in first paycheck, $10,000 after 12 months, $10,000 after 18 months.
Shift Premiums:
- 8‑Hour Shifts – Day: 10%;
Evening: 20% + 10% weekend;
Night: 20% + 10% weekend. - 12‑Hour Shifts – Day (7:00am–7:30pm): 20% for hours 3:30pm–7:30pm + 10% weekend;
Evening/Night (7:00pm–7:30am): 20% + 10% weekend.
- Position is exempt from certain State Human Resources Act provisions (GS126).
- Mandatory to report or stay over during adverse weather events.
- Eligible for sign‑on bonus only if working full‑time (30–40hrs) and not previously employed in NC state government, UNC system, or received a prior state sign‑on bonus.
