Summary
The typical seasonal entry‑on‑duty period for Cape Lookout National Seashore is March 2026. This position is open to the first 75 applicants or until 02/26/2026, whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 EST on the closing day will receive consideration.
LocationPortion of Resource Management Division, Cape Lookout National Seashore, Harkers Island.
Duties- Monitor breeding and migratory bird populations.
- Monitor sea turtle nesting populations.
- Implement management plans to protect breeding shorebird and sea turtle populations.
- Collect resource management data using ArcGIS Field Maps application.
- Operate boats under 26 feet in a coastal environment.
Cape Lookout National Seashore preserves 56 miles of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The park offices are located on Harkers Island. Nearby communities include Beaufort (population 4,464) and Morehead City (population 9,535). The area is a popular tourist destination with year‑round recreational opportunities.
Requirements- U.S. citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
- Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Drug test negative result prior to appointment and subject to random testing.
- Possess or obtain within 2 months of EOD a Departments of the Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or an acceptable equivalent training program.
- Possess a valid state‑issued driver’s license (to operate motor vehicle or four‑wheel drive vehicle). Submit copy of license.
- Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
- Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
To qualify for a GS‑0404‑06 grade level, applicants must meet at least one of the following:
- Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑05 level in federal service, preferably in biological/ecological/fishery/wildlife inventory and monitoring. Resume must detail duties, dates, and hours worked.
- Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a field directly related to biology, ecology, environmental science, marine biology, or marine ecology. Include transcripts.
Volunteer experience may be considered for credit.
Physical DemandsPartially sedentary work with prolonged standing, walking, bending. Lifting and carrying heavy items. Exposure to extreme weather, hazardous chemicals, insects, and wildlife.
Working ConditionsOffice, laboratory, and field environments. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather, terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, insects, snakes, and wild animals. Lab work may involve hazardous chemicals.
