Test Lab Technician II

The Test Lab Technician II has several job responsibilities which they will be required to perform as a primary role or fill-in if required. These include the analysis of product field failures, completion of product qualification testing, production mechanical property testing and production field fabrication tooling management. These responsibilities are generally concluded by the writing of detailed reports describing the analysis or test and its results, updating of computer databases and/or communication with customers both internal and external.

The Test Lab Technician II must have excellent written communication skills as well as the technical skills needed to perform the necessary analysis and testing. Lead/Support quality improvement initiatives as per IATF  to achieve set sigma level for value stream. Guide production team on issue resolution using knowledge relevant to your department specialties.

Principle Duties (includes, but is not limited to):

  • Examines and assesses field failures, using appropriate safety precautions and methodology to determine root cause. Provides formal report on this failure analysis to management, field sales, distribution, and end-user.
  • Interprets engineering drawings, or formulas, and confers with management or engineering staff to determine quality and reliability standards.
  • Performs product qualification testing for new and existing products, including competitive products. Tests products for a wide variety of qualities, such as, dimensions, performance, physical, mechanical, or electrical characteristics including, but not limited to; tensile and elongation testing, specific gravity testing (ASG/RSG), Melt Flow Rate (MFR) testing, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis, ambient and elevated temperature burst and vacuum testing, steam/cold water cycle testing, cold and hot testing, bend radius testing, acid testing.
  • Evaluates data and writes reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards.
  • Recommends modifications of existing quality or production standards to achieve optimum quality within limits of equipment capability.
  • Sets up and performs destructive and non-destructive tests on materials, parts, or products to measure material characteristics.
  • Records test data and report such data through written report or computer transmissions internally and externally.
  • Performs training on field fabrication techniques as assigned.
  • Performs failure analysis using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods to discern root cause.
  • Assists manufacturing in resolving technical problems by interpreting standards and procedures and using own product knowledge.
  • Performs product testing to assure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Writes test reports summarizing results of these tests.
  • Participate in quality improvements as per IATF  ensure to complete toll gates for DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA, Process capability study for in house process
  • Ensure requirements of relevant standards like ISO , PED 2014/68/EU, API Spec. Q1, API 6D, etc. are being consistently met and improved.

Essential Qualifications /

Experience:

  • Experience in using measuring and test equipment.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills used to communicate with vendors/customers, and internal reporting.
  • A broad understanding of Lean concepts is essential. Must be able to identify value-added steps as they apply to the customer and ensure that all processes are continuously reviewed considering efficiency, without compromising product quality.
  • Requires the use of shop mathematics including the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions; the use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, and specifications are also required.
  • Proficient in Excel and other Microsoft Office software.
  • Must be able to interact with management, production leadership, operators, maintenance, and customers to successfully perform job responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Two-year degree or technical certificate.
  • Two years minimum experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
