Full Time Quality Supervisor – Plastic Injection Molding Operations

Position Summary

The Quality Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision and coordination of the Quality Department supporting the plastic injection molding operation. This position ensures that molded products meet customer, engineering, and internal quality requirements while maintaining effective inspection processes, controlling nonconforming material, and supporting production in resolving quality issues.

The Quality Supervisor is expected to be highly visible on the manufacturing floor, provide direction to Quality Technicians/Inspectors, and work closely with Production, Engineering, Maintenance, and Management to prevent defects and improve overall product quality.

Daily Responsibilities
  • Start-of-Shift Quality Review

    At the beginning of each shift, the Quality Supervisor shall:

    • Review previous-shift quality issues, defects, and production concerns.
    • Review scrap, rework, and rejection information.
    • Review production schedules and identify high-risk or new production runs.
    • Confirm Quality Technicians/Inspectors are assigned to required production areas.
    • Review any mold, material, machine, or process changes that may affect product quality.
    • Communicate critical quality concerns to Production and Management.
  • Production Floor Quality Oversight

    The Quality Supervisor shall maintain a regular presence on the injection molding floor and:

    • Monitor production processes for compliance with established work instructions.
    • Verify operators are performing required quality checks.
    • Confirm first-piece/first-article inspections are completed when required.
    • Verify in-process inspections are being performed at the required frequency.
    • Monitor critical dimensions and characteristics.
    • Verify visual requirements, color, surface finish, flash, warpage, sink marks, short shots, burns, cracks, contamination, and other molding defects.
    • Ensure production personnel understand applicable quality requirements.
    • Immediately address significant quality concerns.
    • Stop or quarantine production when there is a reasonable concern that nonconforming product is being produced.
  • Injection Molding Process Quality

    The Quality Supervisor shall work closely with Production and Engineering to monitor molding-related quality issues, including:

    • Mold condition and performance.
    • Machine/process settings affecting product quality.
    • Material identification and traceability.
    • Part cooling and dimensional stability.
    • Mold changes and startup conditions.
    • Color and material changes.
    • Recurring molding defects.

    The Quality Supervisor does not necessarily own the molding process settings but is responsible for identifying when process conditions may be contributing to quality problems and ensuring appropriate corrective action is initiated.

  • Inspection and Testing

    Ensure that required inspections are completed accurately and on time.

    Responsibilities include:

    • First-piece inspection.
    • In-process inspection.
    • Final inspection.
    • Dimensional inspection.
    • Visual inspection.
    • Functional testing when applicable.
    • Material verification.
    • Special customer inspection requirements.
    • Inspection documentation and record retention.
    • Verification that inspection equipment is suitable and available.
    • Review inspection results for accuracy and completeness and ensure problems are escalated appropriately.
  • Nonconforming Material Control

    The Quality Supervisor is responsible for effective control of nonconforming product.

    Daily activities include:

    • Identify and contain suspected nonconforming material.
    • Ensure defective material is properly identified and segregated.
