Assistant Researcher – Biodiversity, Biogeographical Ecology and Evolution (M/F) - 1 Position Available

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) is opening a recruitment and selection process for one position for an Assistant Researcher in Biodiversity, Biogeographical Ecology and Evolution (M/F), this position is open to citizens of any nationality, including stateless individuals, under a permanent employment contract to recruit and select the best candidate for activities within the Mar Plus Project - Hiring of Highly Qualified Human Resources, funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) of the European Union, according to the following conditions:

1. About CCMAR:

CCMAR ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) is one of Portugal's leading marine science research centres, rated Excellent in evaluations promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). With a multidisciplinary team, well-equipped facilities, and laboratories, CCMAR engages in core areas such as research, training, business, societal engagement, and collaboration.

2. Summary and Functions:

The candidate will integrate molecular, ecological, experimental, and modelling approaches to advance scientific knowledge regarding the biodiversity, biogeography, autoecology and evolution of canopy-forming macroalgae and seagrasses, the composition, ecological functions and ecosystem services of macrophyte communities, and their conservation and restoration in a context of anthropogenic impacts including climatic change. The initial tasks and responsibilities will be:

  • Patterns, biogeographical contexts and processes driving marine diversification at, below and above species level;
  • Conservation and restoration of seagrass/seaweed habitats;
  • Biodiversity surveys and baselines assisted by molecular barcoding, metabarcoding or/e DNA.
  • The candidate is expected to secure research funds from national and international calls, publish results in relevant field journals, participate in and organise national/international scientific conferences and meetings, promote CCMAR services and platforms to enhance the offer of technology and knowledge solutions, contribute to outreach activities, advanced training, and supervision of early-career researchers.

    Note:

    The initial work plan may be modified, and the selected candidate may be assigned additional tasks and responsibilities in alignment with the CCMAR's evolving strategy, allowing for adaptation to new priorities and challenges.

    Start Date:

    The contract is expected to start in February 2025.

    5. Workplace:
    Activities will occur at CCMAR (University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal) and other locations necessary for the proposed tasks.

    Working Hours:

    35 hours per week.

    7. Monthly Salary:
    The gross base monthly salary is €3.427,59 (Index 195).

    8. Application Period:
    The application period starts on 6th of January, 2025 and ends on 20th of January, 2025, at 23:59 (Lisbon time, Portugal).

    9. Required Profile:

    9.1) The selected candidate must have completed a PhD in Biological Sciences, Ecology, Marine Biology, or a related field, with at least 6 years of post-doctoral research experience in relevant areas.

    9.2) The candidate must demonstrate a robust research pathway, expertise, and solid scientific publication record in marine biodiversity, biogeographical ecology, and evolution.

    9.3) The candidate must have participated in research projects on biodiversity, ecology, evolution, and conservation of habitat-forming macrophytes (e.g., seaweeds, seagrasses) and their associated biota.
