The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) is opening a recruitment and selection process for one position for an Assistant Researcher in the field of Social Sciences. This position is open to citizens of any nationality, including stateless individuals, under an unfixed-term employment contract to recruit and select the best candidate for activities within the Institutional CEEC
- Support Contract for Associated Laboratories funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), under the following conditions:

1. About CCMAR:

CCMAR is one of the leading marine science research centres in Portugal, rated Excellent in evaluations promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). With a multidisciplinary team, well-equipped facilities, and laboratories, CCMAR engages in core areas such as research, training, business, societal engagement, and collaboration.

2. Summary and Functions:

This position is intended for an assistant researcher in the field of Social Sciences to:

  • Conduct socio-economic impact studies, analysing the impact of maritime activities on local communities, such as fishing and coastal tourism, among others;
  • Collaborate on multidisciplinary projects with marine biologists, oceanographers, and other specialists to address complex issues related to the marine environment;
  • Contribute to the creation and management of marine protected areas, involving local communities, government authorities, and non-governmental organisations;
  • Provide advice and support in the formulation of maritime policies, considering social, cultural, and economic perspectives;
  • Facilitate communication between researchers and coastal communities, including fishermen, to understand their needs, concerns, and traditional knowledge;
  • Conduct research to understand public perceptions on ocean-related issues, such as marine life conservation, pollution, and resource use;
  • Develop educational programs and awareness activities to promote awareness of the importance of oceans and marine sustainability;
  • Supervise students at various levels, particularly master's and doctoral students;
  • Further develop CCMAR's scientific strategy;
  • Secure external funding for research and collaborate on CCMAR's institutional initiatives.

  • Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017, of December 29.
  • Labour Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009, of February 12, in its current version.
  • Decree-Law No. 124/99, of April 20, in its current version.

Start Date:

The contract is expected to start in October 2024.

5. Workplace:
Activities will take place at CCMAR (University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal) and other locations necessary for the proposed tasks.

Working Hours:

35 hours per week.

7. Monthly Salary:
The gross base monthly salary is €3,427.59.

8. Application Period:
The application period starts on June 28, 2024, and ends on July 27, 2024, at 23:59 (Lisbon time, Portugal).

9. Required Profile:

9.1) The selected candidate must have completed a PhD in Social Sciences, Economic Sciences or a similar field, with at least 3 years of experience in similar functions, and have in-depth knowledge of the methodologies within the scope of the call and contributions in the science-politics-society interface.

9.2) The candidate must have an excellent curriculum and demonstrated research capability through publications in internationally recognised journals, project leadership, service provision, invitations to speak at conferences, and awards, and a proven ability to obtain funding in competitive calls.

9.3) High proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Non-compliance with requirements 9.1 to 9.3 invalidates the application. According to the law, false information may be penalised.
