Scientist For The Air Chemistry Observatory

Das Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung is a research institution supported by the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, and the states of Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony. We conduct polar and marine research in a broad multidisciplinary approach, contributing significantly to global environmental, earth system, and paleo climate research in collaboration with numerous academic and non-academic research institutions.

Background:
The AWI conducts a long-term research program at the Neumayer Station III in Antarctica, which includes meteorological, air chemistry, and geophysical observations. The station also serves as a logistical base for aircraft operations and field expeditions during the polar summer (November to February) that extend far into the Antarctic continent.

We are seeking a scientist for the air chemistry observatory (trace gases, aerosols) for the scientific operation of the station. Your tasks include:

  • Independent operation of the observatory routine
  • Conducting routine measurements
  • Ensuring a consistently high quality of collected data
  • Independently identifying repair and maintenance needs
  • Organizing and conducting maintenance and repair measures
  • Collaborating in the analysis of observatory data
  • Contributing to the publication of scientific results
  • Ensuring the continuous operation of the observatory
  • Assisting in data analysis
  • Taking on additional tasks necessary for station operations during the wintering period
  • Participating in general operational procedures of the station
  • Ensuring station operations during the wintering deployment

Your profile:

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master's or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, or related fields
  • Basic knowledge in atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics
  • Practical experience in atmospheric trace gas analysis
  • Basic knowledge in data acquisition
  • Good knowledge in data processing
  • Good English skills (approximately CEFR level B1/B2)
  • Good German skills (approximately CEFR level B1/B2)
  • Medically fit for expeditions

Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Practical experience in trace gas sampling
  • Practical and theoretical experience in aerosol measurement techniques
  • Expedition experience or participation in field measurement campaigns
  • General practical experience in the mechanical and/or electronic field
  • Programming skills and experience with Unix/Linux operating systems

Further information:
The station crew consists of four scientists (geophysics, meteorology, air chemistry), a doctor (station leader), an operations engineer, an electrical engineer, an electronics engineer, and a cook. The positions are for a two-year term. Compensation is based on your qualifications and the tasks assigned, up to salary grade 13, in accordance with the Federal Public Service Collective Agreement (TVöD-Bund). The location is Bremerhaven.

The start date is July 1, 2027. The entire group will be prepared for the tasks in an extensive course system (July to December). The deployment at the Neumayer Station in Antarctica typically lasts about 14 months.
