Assistant Researcher – Macroalgae Ecophysiology, Cultivation, and Restoration

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) is opening a recruitment and selection process for one position as an Assistant Researcher in Macroalgae ecophysiology, cultivation, and restoration, this position is open to citizens of any nationality, including stateless individuals, under a permanent employment contract to recruit and select the best candidate for activities within the Mar Plus Project - Hiring of Highly Qualified Human Resources (SME or CoLAB), funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) of the European Union, according to the following conditions:

1. About CCMAR:

CCMAR ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) is one of Portugal's leading marine science research centres, rated Excellent in evaluations promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). With a multidisciplinary team, well-equipped facilities, and laboratories, CCMAR engages in core areas such as research, training, business, societal engagement, and collaboration.

2. Summary and Functions:

The candidate will coordinate the CCMAR biobank and conduct scientific research with the well-characterized preserved strains to increase their environmental adaptability, promoting sustainable aquaculture development and successful restoration. The following initial tasks will be assigned:

  • Implement and coordinate a macroalgae biobank;
  • Future-proofing of strains for climate change;
  • Macroalgae restoration efforts;
  • Cultivation and screening of promising macroalgae material for aquaculture;
  • Assessment of macroalgae benefits for fish farming;
  • Develop education activities and supervise students.
  • Note:

    This is the initial work plan. However, the selected candidate may be assigned additional tasks and responsibilities in alignment with the CCMAR's evolving strategy, allowing for adaptation to new priorities and challenges.

    3. Applicable Law:

    Start Date:

    The contract is expected to start in February 2025.

    5. Workplace:
    Activities will occur at CCMAR (University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal) and other locations necessary for the proposed tasks.

    Working Hours:

    35 hours per week.

    7. Monthly Salary:
    The gross base monthly salary is €3,427.59 (Index 195).

    8. Application Period:
    The application period starts on 6th of January, 2025 and ends on 20th of January, 2025, at 23:59 (Lisbon time, Portugal).

    9. Required Profile:

    9.1) The selected candidate must have completed a PhD in Biological Sciences, Marine Biology, or a related scientific area for at least 5 years, with extensive experience in similar functions.

    9.2) The candidate must demonstrate expertise in macroalgae strain isolation, reproduction, cultivation, breeding, and the long-term storage of germplasm.

    9.3) The candidate must have a strong background in screening resilient strains for environmental and cultivation conditions and investigating carry-over effects and the transmission modes of traits of interest.

    9.4) The candidate must have a competitive scientific track record and a robust CV that demonstrates eligibility to apply for national and international funding opportunities.

    9.5) The candidate must have experience supervising and providing advanced training, including mentoring MSc and PhD students.

    9.6) High proficiency in spoken and written English (explicitly indicated in the CV).
