Job Overview

A cashier plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of a retail establishment, restaurant, or any business that involves monetary transactions. Their primary responsibility is to handle customer payments, process purchases, and provide excellent customer service accurately and efficiently. Cashiers are responsible for calculating the total amount due, issuing receipts, and giving change when necessary. They also often operate cash registers, credit card terminals, and other payment processing equipment. In addition to these core duties, cashiers may answer customer inquiries, assist with returns or exchanges, and maintain a clean and organized checkout area. Attention to detail, strong math skills, and excellent communication are essential traits for success in this role, as cashiers are often the final point of contact between the business and its customers.

• Accurately and securely handle cash, checks, credit/debit payments.
• Generate and provide receipts for customers' purchases, and document any returns or exchanges in accordance with company policies.
• Scan or manually enter product barcodes, total purchases, and process transactions efficiently through cash registers or point-of-sale (POS) systems.
• Ensure that the cash register or POS system is in good working order, including changing receipt paper, resolving minor technical issues, and reporting any significant problems to management.
• Carefully bag customers' purchases to prevent damage and ensure that items are properly accounted for.
• Have a basic understanding of the products or services offered to assist customers with product inquiries and suggestions.
• Monitor for potential theft or fraudulent activities, such as checking bills for counterfeit currency and following established security protocols.
• Balance cash drawers at the end of each shift to ensure that the amount of money taken in matches the recorded transactions.
• Be vigilant and aware of security risks, such as fraudulent transactions or suspicious customer behavior, and report any concerns to management or security personnel.

South Carolina Serv Safe Alcohol Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) required. The colleague is held accountable for all duties of this job and other duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Basic math skills to accurately handle money and make change.
• Previous cash handling experience is preferred but not required.

• Must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Must be able to lift 20 pounds or more.

While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly required to walk, stand, and sit. Cashiers typically spend their shifts standing behind a cash register or counter, often in a climate-controlled indoor environment such as a retail store, supermarket, restaurant, or gas station. They interact with a diverse range of customers throughout the day, which can be both rewarding and challenging.
