Northern Sites Manager

The Northern Sites Manager is responsible for the stewardship of three northern sites of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve: the Currituck Banks component of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve and the state Kitty Hawk Woods and Buxton Woods components, totaling 3,782 acres. The geographic difference between the three sites and remoteness of the sites requires an incumbent to work independently under general supervision.

The purpose of the Reserve program is to manage sites representative of North Carolina's coastal ecosystems to
1) conduct long-term research and monitoring to promote sound management of these ecosystems;
2) increase understanding of these ecosystems, their importance, and the effects humans have on them; and
3) accommodate compatible traditional uses. Work is multi-disciplinary, and assignments address moderate to complex environmental issues and projects. The employee works closely across Reserve program staff to meet the multi-disciplinary purposes of the program.

The Northern Sites Manager must demonstrate the ability to engage with communities, work independently and as a part of a team, and have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This position requires work in undeveloped outdoor settings using hand and powered tools such as chainsaws in a variety of weather conditions and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Valid driver's license required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Regularly monitor site conditions at the three sites (e.g., facilities, visitor uses, habitats, special species, and boundaries) and conduct site assessments to certify a habitat/project or to ascertain environmental damage or restoration needs.
  • Collect and analyze scientific data to assess environmental conditions and if needed, develop and implement management and restoration plans.
  • Network, collaborate, and problem-solve with a range of partners and stakeholders to accomplish work and ensure compliance with rules and policies at the sites. This includes coordination of a local advisory committee for each site.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the sites and develop and deliver education programs and presentations to government agencies, civic groups, school groups, and the public about the sites.
  • Oversee research activity in coordination with Research staff; and facilitate use of the sites by outside researchers.
  • Hire and supervise interns and temporary staff.
Management Preferences:
  • Prior experience trailering, launching, and/or operating a boat/vessel
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary range: $52,592 – $61,252
