Qualifications

  • Certification as a law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina.
  • Minimum of five years law enforcement/management experience.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Possession of a North Carolina School Resource Officer (SRO) Certification, or the ability to successfully complete SRO certification requirements within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Direct and coordinates the campus police department through active oversight and implementation according to the North Carolina law enforcement officers code of law and the state law for the police force, security guards, and activities on campus. Ensures the campus is safe and secure at all times for employees, students and visitors to SCC.

Essential Duties
  • Leads and directs the campus emergency management committee; stays alert to all campus safety hazards to be corrected in a timely manner.
  • Monitor campus buildings security (doors, windows, gates) by vehicle and foot patrol.
  • Develops and directs the comprehensive campus safety management plan and emergency reference guide.
  • Coordinates campus emergency operations, including incident command, evacuation, lockdown, shelter-in-place, and continuity of operations planning.
  • Develops and delivers ongoing safety training to all employees on an annual basis.
  • Coordinates with the Senior Leadership team on safety issues, recommendations and implementation of tactics for a safe campus.
  • Reports to the Senior Leadership team on campus safety.
  • Maintains constant communication with the COO and Leadership team through cell phone, email and one-on-one interactions.
  • Ensures campus police maintain annual required professional development.
  • Serves as member on the state level ACCSSO (Association of Community College Safety & Security Officers)
  • Serves as liaison with city, county, and state, as it relates to fire, security, and occupational safety.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with students, employees and visitors of the campus.
  • Performs School Resource Officer (SRO) duties as assigned to support campus safety, student engagement, crime prevention, and educational outreach efforts.
  • Assigns and supervises the training of all new campus police and security employees.
  • Ensures that required reports are prepared and filed within deadlines.
  • Prepares the annual operational budget for the police department and security of campus facilities.
  • Maintains and enforces all applicable OSHA programs.
  • Enforce federal, state and local laws and college policies and make arrests when necessary.
  • Respond to emergency needs (medical, traffic, safety) of the students, faculty and staff.
  • Conducts and oversees criminal investigations; prepares reports, collects and preserves evidence, and coordinates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
  • Coordinates security, traffic flow, parking operations, crowd control, and emergency response planning for college events, including graduation ceremonies, athletic events, and other large campus gatherings.
  • Leads the Safety Committee and Emergency Management Team.
  • Stay alert to all campus safety hazards and report to necessary departments.
  • Interview and complete background checks on new police and security personnel
  • Supervise and maintain training records of police and security personnel.
  • Assigns shifts and supervises the training of all new campus police and security personnel.
  • Maintains 24/7 hour contact with college leadership, personnel, and police force for matters related to the safety and security of the campus.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains North Carolina Department of Justice Police Agency Certification and Licensure.
  • Ensures compliance with Criminal Justice Standards Division recordkeeping requirements by maintaining agency administration records, officer employment actions, certification status documentation, compliance review records, and all required electronic submissions.
  • Maintains all police equipment for maintenance, upgrades, and certification requirements, including weapons, uniforms, vehicles, and IT-related technology including software.
  • Complete payroll for police and security once a month.
Skills and Abilities
  • As a key element of this position, the employee must possess leadership and management skills as well as the ability to know when to utilize them.
  • Team building and team membership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of college, community and governmental agencies as a team player.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
  • Carry college required liability insurance.
  • Must be able to work any shift.
