Position: Technician Mechanic (392715C)
Location: Carthage

Reports to: Transportation Manager & Supervisor

Supervises: None

Term of Employment: 12 months

Salary: Mechanic III-65

FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt

Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school
  • One to three years of training or experience in repairs and maintenance of automotive equipment
  • Must possess or obtain a North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) with proper endorsements for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the DMV and pass a DOT drug and alcohol test
  • Must possess (and maintain) a North Carolina Bus Inspection license
Essential Job Functions:
  • Demonstrates high level of knowledge, skills and abilities pertaining to troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of automotive/bus equipment
  • Demonstrates higher level of knowledge, skills and abilities pertaining to tools and equipment used in repairs of buses and service vehicles
  • Demonstrates higher level of knowledge, skills and abilities of methods of adjusting and repairing electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment
  • Has ability to comprehend and apply NC Inspection Law
  • Has ability to read and comprehend technical materials
  • Repairs electrical systems to ensure proper functioning
  • Repairs, adjusts or replaces starter, generator, transmission and clutch assemblies
  • Has ability to diagnose complex mechanical problems
  • Operates specialized power equipment recondition motor assemblies
  • Conducts complete engine turn-up using computerized equipment
  • Identifies, diagnoses and repairs complex malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment including checking for worn components
  • Examines and rebuilds (or replaces) mechanical components
  • Lubricates moving parts of vehicle chassis
  • Checks, adds and replaces fluids and lubricants
  • Rotates, replaces and repairs tires
  • Tests electrical systems
  • Tests, repairs and/or replaces faulty equipment for compliance with safety standards
  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMs) on all assigned vehicles at specified intervals per NCDPI
  • Performs 30 day monthly inspections on all assigned vehicles
  • Performs annual inspections as required by NC DMV
  • Responds to road side emergencies such as breakdowns and accidents as needed
  • Provides (and assists with) leadership/mentorship training to less experienced technicians (Technician I and II)
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to this job classification within Moore County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:
  • constantly display advanced mechanical abilities and knowledge of bus systems and engine operation to include repair actions
  • walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
  • work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • use a variety of measuring devices
  • display mechanical ability to assemble and fabricate parts
  • operate motor vehicles
  • operate job specific equipment, per instructions, to determine servicing requirements for parts and systems
  • determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • observe general surroundings and activities
  • hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
  • safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
