Position OverviewThis multiskilled role requires qualification within the Mechanical Maintenance job family as well as qualification in two secondary skillsets (IC&E and Operations). The position is responsible for following approved procedures for the start‑up, shutdown, normal operations, monitoring, servicing, and maintenance of all equipment and systems at the coal generating facility. It includes monitoring equipment performance through testing, analysis, and reporting variances, troubleshooting, repairs, and calibrations.
The employee must be familiar with emergency procedures and accountable for adhering to all location safety procedures including red tagging and personal protective equipment.
- Start‑up, shutdown, and normal operation of plant equipment and systems
- Monitoring, testing, analyzing, and reporting equipment performance variances
- Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating plant equipment
- Executing emergency procedures during abnormal operations
- Adhering to safety procedures, including red tagging and PPE usage
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer skills with Windows applications, email, and work management software
- Mechanical, electrical, or I&C experience
- Ability to wear required safety equipment and work in confined spaces
- Pass respiratory physical and wear all personal protective equipment
- Participate in specialty training (Fire Brigade, Confined Space, Rescue, Hazmat & First Responder)
- Attend training classes and complete the Employee Development and Qualifications Program (EDQP)
- Complete EEI’s Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and/or Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS)
- Work around equipment that generates electromagnetic fields (EMF)
- Meet a weight restriction of 325 pounds (essential function of the job)
- Onsite at company facility
- Requires mobility: walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, working in extreme heat or cold, on grating surfaces at extreme heights
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Work at heights and from suspended platforms
- 24/7 operation, 365 days a year with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, humidity
- Frequent weekends and holidays
- Climbing ladders and stairs at various heights, entering vessels or equipment with limited access
- Potential high‑stress situations and emergency response availability
- Potential shift work and exposure to electromagnetic fields
Preferred Qualifications
- Two‑year technical degree in machinery technology
- Duke Energy rigging and lifting certifications
- 3 years of machining experience
- 3 years of power plant mechanical maintenance and/or operations experience
- Knowledge of overall operating fundamentals of generating station systems, equipment, and processes
- Experience monitoring and troubleshooting equipment in fluid system operation (pumps, valves, boilers, etc.)
- Training in computer‑controlled equipment
- Safe work practices and positive work attitude
- Initiative, independent work, and teamwork abilities
- Training in hazardous material spills, fire brigade, and first responder
- 3 years of welding experience in boilers, pressure piping, and structural steel
- Welding certifications
- Experience in mechanical maintenance of power plant equipment
