Position
Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for a Crew Supervisor to join our Water Construction team. Brunswick County Public Utility provides water services to nearly 67,000 metered customers across a large service area. The Water Construction division plays a vital role in helping to ensure that clean, reliable, and efficient water services are available across the County, and that a resilient water infrastructure is maintained.
ResponsibilitiesThe Crew Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the work of mechanics and technicians involved in service tap installation, preventative maintenance, repair and operations of the water and sewer systems, road construction and repair, and stormwater repair and installation. Work includes:
- performing specialized skilled work as related to the Brunswick County utility system and related appurtenances.
- assigning and coordinating work orders for meter leaks, line breaks, utility line installations, pressure regulators, line flushing, etc.
- performing cost analysis and assisting in budget preparation.
- reading and comprehending construction plans and specifications and scaling plans and recording changes to proper stationing as required.
- taking grade shots and converting information to plan elevations.
- ensuring water lines are laid at proper grades as directed by state regulations.
- operating a variety of equipment associated with heavy construction (i.e., horizontal directional drilling equipment, backhoe, track hoe, dump truck, front end loader, bulldozer, etc.).
- testing for, locating, and repairing water leaks and deficiencies found within the water and wastewater system.
- ensuring proper setup/tear-down of traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment.
- ensuring worksite cleanup (i.e., materials hauling/disposal, site restoration activities, etc.) is completed.
- maintaining and repairing equipment as required.
- coordinating with Purchasing to acquire parts for operation and maintenance of the utility system.
- assisting with and resolving complaints from utility customers and other members of the public.
Additionally, the Crew Supervisor is responsible for assisting with safety procedures, standard operating procedures, and coordinating required training for mechanics and technicians, assisting in the preparation of a variety of reports, and maintaining records related to the utility system. Excellent leadership skills, highly self‑motivated, and the ability to work independently while exercising good judgement are required. This position reports directly to the Construction Superintendent.
ShiftSchedule
Crew Supervisors are scheduled to work Monday – Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm (summer hours 6:00 am - 2:30 pm) with occasional extended hours as required to meet operational demands. This position will be placed on an on‑call rotation schedule which requires a response to emergency calls both after hours and during inclement weather conditions. This position is also considered an ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE POSITION under County policy and will be required to work to maintain essential operations during inclement weather, non‑emergency closure, and/or closure due to a state of emergency/county disaster.
QualificationsHigh school diploma AND ten (10) years’ experience in construction with a preferred emphasis in utilities (water/wastewater) construction, including seven (7) years’ experience acting in a supervisory capacity; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Valid NC or SC driver license required.
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or ability to attain during the probationary period required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity/experience utilizing work order software (i.e., Lucity) is required.
- Familiarity with testing procedures related to utility system installation in support of engineering certifications.
- Competent Person and Confined Space Entry training required.
- Directional Drill and/or Inserta Value experience preferred.
- Valid wastewater collections or distribution system certification preferred.
Must be physically able to operate pump station equipment and motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force and/or up to 50 pounds of force more frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
