ResponsibilitiesThis position will report to the Rutherford County Maintenance Office and focus on the maintenance and repair of State‑maintained roads within Rutherford County. The work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Operations will also involve the use and maintenance of equipment such as, but not limited to, an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe.
The position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, as well as scheduled night work.
CDL RequirementsThe selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL‑required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of the hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, or the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on‑the‑job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the hire date.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
Grade: NC05 – $33,902.00 to $59,327.00
Minimum Education and ExperienceHigh School or General Education Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Legal RequirementsPre‑employment drug testing is required. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed to allow NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
