Facility Maintenance Electrician
Winston‑Salem State University is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrician to join the Facilities Maintenance team for the Department of Housing & Residence Life. The Electrician will support the maintenance and repair of electrical systems within student housing facilities, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and well‑maintained environment for students and staff.
Responsibilities- Perform inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities.
- Install, maintain, and repair secondary electrical systems and related equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switch gear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors.
- Troubleshoot and repair control systems, including temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators.
- Complete scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
- Conduct electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems to avoid downtime and improve system longevity.
- Repair and maintain lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles.
- Work with the Facilities Management team to address maintenance needs and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on improving the student living experience.
- Respond to service requests promptly, completing work orders and ensuring all maintenance issues are resolved effectively.
- Maintain records of repairs and maintenance performed.
- Manage work orders in Team Dynamix.
- Adhere to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations while performing tasks, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the general public.
- Support plumbing and HVAC repair and maintenance as part of the Facilities Maintenance team to ensure proper function across student housing facilities.
- High school diploma or equivalency; demonstration of competencies necessary to perform the work; some positions may require special licenses or certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance or a related field, preferably in a university or large residential setting.
- Formal training or certifications in electrical systems or other mechanical trades is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems and general mechanical maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues effectively.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in mechanical maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in facility maintenance.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and contractors.
- Physical:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces. - Electrical license or certification preferred.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license required.
Full‑time, 40 hours per week, 7:00 am–4:00 pm, on campus. The position requires being on‑call during emergencies and may involve callback work.
