Description
An employee in this class participates in fire suppression, fire education and prevention, technical rescue, emergency medical and other incident response operations at the fire station. Employees work as part of a team to maintain facilities, equipment, and apparatus, and also assist in pre-incident planning, maintaining records, conducting inspections, and training programs. The employee must stay current on state‑of‑the‑art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment, and incorporate necessary changes into in‑service training.
Hazards include working inside and outside environments, extreme heat and cold, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, oils, respirator use, close quarters, and OSHA blood borne pathogen standards. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports on the quality and effectiveness of completed work.
- Participate in incident response including firefighting operations, operating fire apparatus and other equipment as required; remediate chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other incidents; provide Emergency Medical Technician services; and respond to technical rescue calls.
- Inspect the station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; maintain equipment and restock supplies as needed.
- Perform maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, and related facilities.
- Assist with preparation of fire reports, participate in special projects, training, fire pre‑planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, mechanic maintenance and repair, and testing of hoses, pumpers, hydrants, and other related activities.
- Participate in training on shift and when required on other occasions.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess visual acuity to assess color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.

Education and Experience:- Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must possess NC Firefighter I/II certification or equivalency.
- Must possess North Carolina EMT‑B certification.
- Must possess Hazardous Materials I level certification.
