Description of Work

This position performs maintenance and repair of diesel engines and marine equipment for the Department of Transportation Ferry Division. Employees receive assignments from a Marine Mechanic Supervisor and work on ferry vessels, performing tasks ranging from routine service to moderate‑complex repairs. Supervision is adjusted based on assignment scope and difficulty. The role also assists other entities within the Ferry Division and may require overnight travel.

The employee will be based at the Hatteras Marine Maintenance Facility.

Responsibilities
  • Repair and overhaul diesel engines, including disassembly, inspection, and re‑assembly of valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears, and chains.
  • Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches, and couplings.
  • Replace and align propeller shafts and bearings.
  • Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps, and hydraulic pumps.
  • Operate bench grinders, hand grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, pneumatic tools, drill press, hydraulic press.
  • Read, understand, and utilize blueprints.
  • Use measuring instruments such as dial calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, radius gauges, multimeters, and telescoping gauges.
  • Perform related duties as required by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

/ Management Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine operating principles.
  • Knowledge of reduction gear and hydraulic system operating principles.
  • Knowledge of air, electric control, vacuum, and pressure pump operating principles.
  • Ability to diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate repair procedures.

Minimum

Education and Experience:

  • High school or GED diploma plus three years of progressive experience in repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems, and components—preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Offer of employment contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT and Ferry Division drug and Fit‑For‑Duty tests.

Salary Range

Grade NC08: $39,244 – $68,679.
