Distribution Mechanic

Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for a Distribution Mechanic to join our Water Distribution team. Brunswick County Public Utility provides water services to nearly 67,000 metered customers across a large service area. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of service to our customers every day.

The Distribution Mechanic works as part of a crew to perform a variety of both manual labor and specialized skilled work to assist in the maintenance and operation of the potable water distribution system. Duties include monitoring the distribution system water quality parameters, tank levels, pump station settings and system hydraulics, compliance sampling and collection, valve maintenance, hydrant flushing, new line inspections, and main line repairs.

The Distribution Mechanic operates and maintains surge tanks, chlorination, and chlorination facilities at pump stations throughout the County's utility systems and responds to water quality and water pressure concerns. This position is also responsible for construction work, preventive maintenance and operation of pumping equipment, control valves, utility lines, and storage facilities in the utility system as required. The Distribution Mechanic reports to a Crew Supervisor and is responsible for taking appropriate safety measures and following established safety policies and procedures while performing all work.

This position will be placed on an on-call rotation (one week every 5-6 weeks) that requires a response to emergency calls outside of normal business hours. This position is also considered an ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE POSITION under County policy and will be required to work to maintain essential operations during inclement weather, non-emergency closure, and/or closure due to a state of emergency/county disaster If you are a team player who enjoys working outside, is detail oriented, takes pride in your work, and can use independent judgement and take initiative to get a job done, we'd love to hear from you!

Brunswick County Public Utilities utilizes a career ladder program for advancement which allows employees to further their career in the water distribution field through promotion as advanced grades of NC Water Distribution Operator Certification are attained. Promotions include a 5% pay increase when all criteria are met.

Individuals who do not possess an NC Water Distribution Operator Certification will be hired at a Mechanic I level. Training and testing fees for water distribution certification are paid for by Brunswick County. Placement as a Mechanic II, III or IV based on NC Water Distribution Operator Certification level and experience. Employees with appropriate certification will be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Back-up ORC as necessary.

High school diploma (or GED) and experience in water distribution; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Valid NC or SC Driver License required. NC Water Distribution Operator Certification preferred. Possession of Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A desirable. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including motor vehicles, pumps, tractors, lawn mowers, generators, water pumps, etc.,

and mechanic's hand tools. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, reach, lift, and bend. Must be able to work in confined areas.
