Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Operator
Job
Position OverviewSupervises employees and operations at an asphalt plant to weigh and deliver specified quantities of aggregates and asphalt cement to the dryer for heating and to the mixer for mixing and dumping into trucks. Must partner with other plant crew members to ensure production is running at efficient levels.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)- Pre‑shift inspection of plant to ensure everything is in operational order and all safety items are checked.
- Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Answer telephone, radio, and take and input orders.
- Maintain proper heat in dryer by adjusting thermostatic controls and keep proper flow of materials.
- Observe gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.
- Assist in maintenance of plant equipment and compile reports on plant production and maintenance.
- Inspect plant and safety items at the end of each shift.
- Grease equipment and clean up required at the end of each shift.
- Adhere to company attendance policy to ensure crew operates at normal efficiency level.
- Maintain a courteous and professional manner with co‑workers, customers, and the public.
- Demonstrate integrity, communication, recognition, action, results orientation, positive attitude, work ethic, growth and development, and commitment to success at APAC Asheville.
- Show a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Interact with vendors, construction employees, and all levels of management.
- Possess a valid driver’s license for operation of a company vehicle.
- Be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Strictly adhere to APAC Asheville safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Work in a team environment and assist co‑workers with other duties as required.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education / Experience- High school education or GED preferred but not required.
- Related experience and/or training required.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Communicate effectively to ensure all plant personnel understand expectations.
- Drive to and from various plants as needed.
- Be flexible with last‑minute schedule changes, location changes, and time‑of‑shift changes.
- Overtime work required; out‑of‑town, county, or state work may be required.
- Work at heights up to 90 feet wearing appropriate PPE for maintenance or repair of plant components using ladders, stairs, manlifts, and catwalks.
- Adhere to PPE policy and maintain personal protective equipment in a functional condition.
- Attend according to Company Attendance Policy.
- Ride to and from plants; operating a company vehicle requires meeting the Driver Qualification Standard.
- Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems and ability to operate plant computer systems.
- Physical ability to perform maintenance on plant under extreme temperatures for extended periods.
- Climb stairs and ladders to the plant/ silo top.
- Use tools such as sledge hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, cutting torch, welder, pneumatic hammer/drill, sand blaster, and pipe wrench.
- Perform motions including climbing, stooping, stretching, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs with proper lifting techniques.
- Adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures.
- Will be exposed to extremes of heat or cold weather.
