Primary Purpose of Position

This position provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs that support Surry County agriculture. Core areas include consumer and commercial livestock production, pasture management, animal nutrition and waste management, pond management, and the 4‑H & youth livestock program.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Livestock Agent will serve Surry County, a rural community with a mix of crop, livestock, and poultry production. The agent will promote NC State’s research and resources to county residents and stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain organized programs that follow NC Cooperative Extension, county, and national laws, policies, and guidelines.
  • Determine clientele needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the agriculture program and services on a regular basis.
  • Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations to meet the needs of the agriculture community.
  • Network with agents, specialists, and local agriculture producers to plan and implement innovative field days and educational programs.
  • Promote agriculture within the county.
  • Engage contract poultry growers, beef producers, sheep producers, goat producers, mixed‑use farms, and new farmers to expand outreach.
  • Assist in developing the 4‑H & youth livestock program and collaborate with county departments such as Emergency Services, Animal Control, Soil & Water, NRCS, and FSA.
  • Coordinate with the county pesticide coordinator to deliver educational pesticide training for private, public, and commercial operators.
  • Develop and market educational programs with measurable impacts and collaborate with other agencies and organizations to reach intended audiences.
Requirements and Preferences Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in an agricultural or related major.
  • Or a Bachelor’s degree completed at least half of a Master’s program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in an agricultural or related field.
  • Or a completed Master’s degree in an agricultural or related field.
Preferred Experience
  • Master’s degree.
  • Extension or other professional experience, including high level computer competency.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
Work Schedule

8:15 am – 5:00 pm; evenings and weekends as required.
