Description

Job Summary:

The Construction Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and support of broadband infrastructure using a variety of construction and locating equipment, including trenchers, backhoes, borers, and utility locators. This role requires the ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and equipment manuals, perform routine equipment maintenance, and follow all safety procedures and regulatory requirements to complete underground and aerial plant construction.

The Construction Technician works collaboratively with team members to complete projects efficiently while upholding company standards for safety, professionalism, and customer satisfaction. A valid Commercial Class A Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 12 months is required.

Requirements

Essential Functions:
  • Interpret staking sheets and follow installation specifications for underground and aerial plant construction.
  • Assist with burying plant by operating trenchers, backhoes, directional borers, and other powered construction equipment.
  • Assist with burying service drops at customer locations by operating trenchers and other digging equipment.
  • Perform underground installation and repair of plant infrastructure and assist with aerial work as assigned.
  • Maintain powered equipment by performing and/or scheduling routine and emergency maintenance and repair.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, spades, rakes, etc. to finish work, and various handheld communication devices.
  • Operate locating equipment as needed.
  • Conduct work in confined spaces and varying outdoor environments.
  • Complete required job documentation and reports.
  • Operate company vehicles, including trucks with attached trailers, to transport materials and equipment.
  • Work assigned schedules based on operational and business needs, which may include rotating on-call responsibilities outside regular business hours, and overtime related to workload demands, service interruptions, outages, or weather-related events.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Perform other duties/special projects as required.
  • Participate on behalf of the company in community and company-sponsored activities as requested.
  • Attend safety meetings, completes safety & security trainings, and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Actively maintain and enhance job-related knowledge and skills through ongoing professional learning and development.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous heavy equipment operation experience required.
  • Experience with bucket trucks and/or aerial work preferred.
  • 10-hour OSHA (Construction), Flagger, and Work Zone Supervisor certifications or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Commercial Class A Driver’s License (CDL) required or ability to achieve within 12 months.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and the ability to travel throughout the company’s service area is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Apply information from staking sheets, maps, construction drawings, installation specifications, and operating or maintenance manuals to complete assigned construction and installation work accurately.
  • Knowledge of underground and aerial communications plant construction, installation, repair, and maintenance practices.
  • Safely operate trenchers, backhoes, directional borers, locating equipment, trailers, and other powered construction equipment.
  • Skill in using hand tools, power tools, and handheld communication devices to complete installation, repair, and field support tasks.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and coordinate or complete maintenance and repair needs for assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Complete required job documentation, reports, and related records accurately and timely.
  • Safely operate company vehicles, including trucks with attached trailers, and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Work independently and as part of a team while prioritizing assigned work and responding to changing operational needs.
  • Communicate with co-workers, customers, and business contacts in a professional, courteous, and effective manner.
