Description
An employee in this class inspects, troubleshoots, and performs routine to moderately complex maintenance and repair work on County vehicles including trucks, cars, vans, buses, small engine powered equipment, mower decks, and related work as required; ordering parts; scheduling appointments for in-house work as well as out of shop work; performing record keeping of gas card, gas reports, Sheriff Department impounded vehicles, inspections, and work tickets on all County vehicles;
handling the release and collection of fees for impounded Sheriff Department vehicles; and performing monthly report on inspected vehicles. Reports to Operations Director.

handling the release and collection of fees for impounded Sheriff Department vehicles; and performing monthly report on inspected vehicles. Reports to Operations Director.
- Performs supervisor and lead duties for other mechanics in the department.
- Performs maintenance for County vehicles and Emergency Response vehicles; orders parts for vehicles.
- Maintains accurate records of maintenance performed on County vehicles.
- Schedules work on vehicles in-house as well as out of shop work.
- Maintains records of the Sheriff Department’s impounded vehicles.
- Handles the release and collection of fees for Sheriff Department’s impounded vehicles.
- Maintains records of gas cards; orders and issues gas cards.
- Coordinates vehicle insurance claims with insurance claim adjusters.
- Maintains the inventory of tools and equipment.
- Performs North Carolina vehicle inspections and prepares monthly reports.
- Cleans and maintains shop in safe and orderly condition.
- Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as repair orders, bills, computer trouble codes, parts catalog, and impound form.
- Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as work order form, County vehicle list, fuel cards, and North Carolina inspection reports.
- Refers to auto repair manuals, head light adjuster manual, air conditioner manual, trouble code manual, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as handheld computer, brake lathe machine, air conditioner machine, transmission machine, vehicle lift, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools such as air wrenches, hand wrenches, floor jack, parts washer, brake lathe, vehicle lifts, A/C equipment, tire changer, engine hoist, etc.
- Maintains and stocks a variety of supplies such as oil, Freon, transmission fluid, filters, tires, wiper blades, batteries, etc.
- Operates a diagnostic computer and a variety of computer software, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Operations Director, department heads, drivers of County vehicles, owners of impounded vehicles, insurance claim adjusters, parts vendors, and the general public.
- Answers the telephone providing assistance, taking messages and transferring calls er to appropriate personnel.
- Coordinates towing and wrecker service.
- Completes work orders of repaired vehicles.
- Picks up paperwork from the Sheriff Department for impound vehicles.
- Serves as Fork Lift Operator for receiving supplies for Purchasing Agent.
- Performs related duties as required.
