GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Electric Systems Crew Chief serves as the field operations supervisor of semi-skilled to skilled employees performing the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power facilities, substations, and other electrical infrastructure. Emphasis of the work is on work planning, on-site supervision, and evaluation of work performed by electrical power crews. Work includes determining personnel requirements, assigning work to employees based on skill levels, scheduling work orders, training less skilled personnel, and ensuring adherence to federal (OSHA) workplace safety regulations.
Additionally, the Electric Systems Crew Chief is responsible for the Town’s electrical distribution system including installation and repair of overhead and underground electric circuits, installation of services to businesses and dwelling, and some limited maintenance of substations. Work involves the installation of poles, pulling of overhead and underground wire, splicing and repair of line, installation and repair of transformers in both energized and de-energized environments.
This employee reports to the Electric Systems Superintendent for overall direction and is evaluated on the basis of attainment of individual and team objectives, safety of work crews, and quality of work performed.
- Supervises the work of semi-skilled and skilled electrical line installation and maintenance personnel; may perform the more complex maintenance and service activities; troubleshoots fault identification to determine nature of problem and determines processes for corrections.
- Monitors and evaluates activities of employees for effectiveness, completeness, and compliance with safety standards; compiles daily work reports and submits to supervisor.
- Trains new employees in varied aspects of electrical construction and maintenance activities; consults with management about employee relations issues to maintain a competent and motivated workforce.
- Reviews and edits maps and blueprints of electrical distribution systems; trains subordinates in the design and maintenance requirements of the town’s electrical infrastructure.
- Operates the line and service trucks in removing poles, setting new poles, positioning hole digging equipment.
- Participates in hanging and connecting transformers.
- Participates with Journeyman level line workers in stringing primary and secondary lines; attaching wire to insulators, and cross arms; installing, repairing, and replacing cross arms, supports insulators, lightning arresters, and fuse cutouts; and maintaining and repairing streetlight systems.
- Digs trenches for underground lines and anchors and attaches anchors to support cables; pulls wire; and participates in stringing wires.
- Operates bucket truck and in bucket to wire electrical components.
- Assists in the installation of primary and secondary underground cables; pulls cut ins for electrical underground services.
- Assists in installation of sleeves, elbows, and transformers based on job site requirements.
