Plumbing Technician / Plumber Job Description

Position Summary

The Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting plumbing systems throughout the school district's facilities. This position ensures that all plumbing fixtures, water systems, drainage systems, and related equipment operate safely and efficiently to support a healthy learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing systems, including water, sewer, drainage, and gas lines.
• Repair and replace plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, urinals, water fountains, faucets, and valves.
• Inspect plumbing systems and equipment to identify maintenance needs and prevent system failures.
• Respond to emergency plumbing situations, including leaks, clogged drains, broken pipes, and sewer backups.
• Maintain and repair water heaters, pumps, backflow prevention devices, and related equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems according to district schedules.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal plumbing codes and safety regulations.
• Assist with maintenance projects, renovations, and construction activities as assigned.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment repairs.
• Monitor inventory and request plumbing supplies and replacement parts.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, and specialized plumbing equipment safely.
• Collaborate with other maintenance personnel to support district facilities and operations.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

• Knowledge of commercial plumbing systems, methods, materials, and tools.
• Ability to diagnose and repair plumbing issues efficiently.
• Understanding of safety practices and applicable plumbing codes.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents and blueprints.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize assignments.
• Effective communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and in confined spaces.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Journeyman Plumber license preferred or required according to state regulations.
• Three (3) years of commercial or institutional plumbing experience preferred.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass required background checks for employment in a school setting.

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and more with assistance.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work in mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, and other confined areas.

Work is performed in schools, administrative buildings, athletic facilities, and support facilities throughout the district. The position may require occasional overtime, on-call duty, and emergency response outside of normal working hours.
