District Social Worker

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:
The District Social Worker supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success of students by identifying and reducing barriers that interfere with learning. The position serves as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies to ensure students receive equitable access to educational opportunities and support services. The District Social Worker collaborates with school staff, families, and community partners to promote student attendance, mental wellness, crisis response, and overall student success in alignment with the district's mission of "Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day."
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct and indirect social work services to students and families throughout the district.
- Conduct assessments related to attendance, behavior, mental health, family needs, and social-emotional concerns affecting student performance.
- Develop intervention plans to address barriers impacting student achievement and school engagement.
- Conduct home visits to improve student attendance, family engagement, and school participation.
- Collaborate with administrators, counselors, nurses, teachers, and community agencies to coordinate services for students and families.
- Assist with crisis intervention, threat assessments, suicide prevention efforts, and emergency response activities.
- Support students and families experiencing homelessness in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
- Coordinate referrals for mental health counseling, social services, healthcare, and other community resources.
- Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, and student support meetings as appropriate.
- Monitor and support attendance improvement initiatives and dropout prevention efforts.
- Maintain accurate documentation, case notes, reports, and records in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
- Provide consultation and training to school personnel regarding trauma-informed practices, student mental health, family engagement, and community resources.
- Advocate for equitable access to educational and support services for all students.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer of Student Services or Superintendent.
- Knowledge of school social work practices, ethics, and professional standards.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, crisis intervention, attendance laws, and family systems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, staff, and community agencies.
- Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and case management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary educational team.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws related to student services, homelessness, special education, and student welfare.
- Ability to support students in a rural school district and connect families with community-based resources.
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.
- Valid North Carolina Professional Educator's License in School Social Work.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Master's degree in Social Work (MSW).
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential.
- Experience working in public schools or with children and families.
- Experience with crisis response, attendance intervention, and community partnerships.
- Ability to travel between school sites, student homes, and community agencies.
- Ability to conduct home visits and participate in crisis response activities.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
- Ten-month position
- Salary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule
