Appalachian Community Services provides Mental Health, Behavioral Health, Substance Use, and Developmental Disability services to individuals, families, and communities within the seven western counties of North Carolina. We provide a wide range of walk‑in, psychiatric, substance abuse, and crisis services to adults and children.
About the RoleAs the Psychiatrist for our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program, you will have the opportunity to practice psychiatry in a highly collaborative and mission‑driven environment focused on serving individuals with the most complex behavioral health needs. Rather than providing care from behind a desk, you will partner with a multidisciplinary team to deliver person‑centered, recovery‑oriented treatment that helps individuals remain stable in the community, reduce hospitalizations, and achieve meaningful life goals.
This role combines direct psychiatric care, clinical consultation, and medical leadership to support some of the most vulnerable individuals we serve.
- Sees individuals for the assessment and treatment of the individual’s symptoms and response to medication including side effects
- Participates in the daily ACT team meetings and treatment planning meetings
- Provide clinical supervision and oversight of the psychiatric services delivered by the team NP or PA
- Collaborate with the ACT Team Leader in sharing overall clinical responsibility for monitoring the individual’s treatment and clinical supervision to the team
- Collaborate with the nursing team to oversee the medical care of individuals that include regular screenings for medical conditions and assessment of wellness and health management
- Collaborates with team members to develop and implement medication administration policies
- Provide education to non‑medical team members on psychiatric and non‑psychiatric medications, their side effects, and health‑related conditions
- Participates in the daily team meetings and treatment planning meetings
- Provides brief therapy (formal or informal)
- Provides psychiatric back‑up to the program
- Conduct psychiatric assessments and manage medications
- Provide clinical supervision and support to NPs/PAs and team members
- Collaborate with nursing and ACT staff to coordinate comprehensive care
- The ACT team psychiatrist shall be board eligible or certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and licensed to practice in NC and meet the credentialing and qualifications as specified in NCAC 27G .0104(16). License should be clear with no restrictions.
