Responsibilities
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with staff, offenders, and the public.
- Defend oneself against attack by violent persons.
- Work under stressful conditions caused by contact with incarcerated offenders who may be physically violent or verbally abusive.
- Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Operate office machines and prepare written reports and forms that accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.
- Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper, safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, documentation, and personal observation.
- Perform crisis intervention and routine counseling, including suicide prevention.
- Account for supplies and equipment.
- Implement and manage correctional programs.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of prison policies and procedures.
- Apply supportive counseling and interviewing techniques.
- Gather and evaluate information concerning an individual's past experience, training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
- Maintain knowledge of community services available to individuals.
- Develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise programs within the framework of prison policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field from an accredited institution; or high school or GED diploma with two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
- Must pass a criminal background check, produce a negative drug screening result, and successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must report or stay over during adverse weather events (mandatory).
- Preferred:
Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.
Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408
