QUALIFICATIONS :
- Bachelor's degree or above in School Social Work from a regionally-accredited college or university
- North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in School Social Work
- Interested individuals without this license, but with a Bachelor's degree or above in Social Work may qualify for a provisional license in School Social Work
SUMMARY :
The School Social Worker promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment. Such an environment is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention strategies.
The School Social Worker’s principal task is to empower students, families, and school personnel to access available opportunities and resources that develop each student's potential. Integrated into all major functions are home, school, community assimilation; diversity and cultural competence; dropout prevention; graduation awareness; and adherence to federal and state statutes, professional development and practices, School Social Work Standards, and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. - Helps students and families make the best use of available opportunities and resources and to fully develop each student’s individual potential
- Provides the necessary professional skills to assist students and communities in problem solving and conflict resolution in a safe and healthy manner
- Assists parents in utilizing school and community resources to help children maximize their educational abilities
- Coordinates services with community agencies and other disciplines within the school
- Coordinates various prevention and intervention programs and services
- Participates in referrals, placements, behavioral modification plans and case studies
- Provides individual and group counseling, case management, home visits and assessments
- Serves as liaison between school, family and community
- Adheres to the National Association of Social Workers code of ethical behavior and professional practice
- Models professional behaviors that contribute to addressing the needs of students, families and the school community
- Keeps abreast of current community resources and determines how these resources may be beneficial to the student, his/her family, and the family’s involvement in the academic process
- Understands, and abides by, federal, state and local laws, such as child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights and privacy
- Consults with school personnel to encourage compliance with laws, statutes and policies
