Location: Marion
An employee in this class is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons at County-operated aquatic facilities. Work involves monitoring swimmers, enforcing pool rules, preventing accidents, responding to emergencies, and providing lifesaving and first aid services as needed.
- Maintain constant surveillance of assigned pool and aquatic areas to identify and respond to safety hazards or emergencies.
- Enforce all pool rules, regulations, and County policies in a consistent and professional manner.
- Respond immediately and appropriately to aquatic emergencies, including water rescues and first aid situations.
- Administer first aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving measures as required.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures of the pool facility.
- Conduct routine safety checks of pool areas, equipment, and rescue supplies.
- Maintain a clean and orderly pool deck, including assisting with basic facility cleanliness.
- Complete incident reports and documentation accurately and timely.
- Assist with swim tests, patron education, and general customer service.
- Participate in in-service trainings, drills, and staff meetings as required.
- Support other Parks and Recreation staff as needed to ensure safe facility operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of lifeguarding principles, water rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures.
- Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and swimmer distress quickly and accurately.
- Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work under pressure.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Ability to act decisively and calmly in emergency situations.
- Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross, Ellis, or equivalent).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Ability to successfully complete a swim test and skills evaluation.
- Prior lifeguarding or aquatic experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to swim continuously and perform rescues in deep and shallow water.
- Ability to lift, carry, and assist individuals weighing up to approximately 50 pounds or more in emergency situations.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move quickly for extended periods.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments, including exposure to sun, heat, humidity, and chlorinated water.
- Seasonal and/or part-time position.
- Work schedule may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on facility needs.
