Position Overview

Burke County Public Schools is seeking dependable, safety‑minded community members to join the transportation team as a part‑time school bus driver on the morning route.

• Perform pre‑trip, on‑trip, and post‑trip inspections as required by the Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
• Report mechanical defects and failures to the Zone Transportation Supervisor or appropriate personnel.
• Operate the assigned school bus on the provided route and schedule, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and school bus regulations.
• Maintain student discipline and enforce the discipline plan consistent with school objectives.
• Respond to emergencies by clearing the bus and evacuating students quickly.
• Keep the bus clean and free of items that present safety hazards.
• Complete personal time cards and required reports, including accident/incident reports.
• Secure the bus after each run, ensuring all doors are closed and windows secured.
• Maintain professional relationships with parents/guardians and school personnel.

High school graduation; experience driving large vehicles preferred. Equivalent training or experience may be considered.

Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification.

• Physical Requirements – able to operate a school bus, quickly decelerate and apply the brake in emergencies, turn the steering wheel rapidly, use seat belt and parking brake, evacuate passengers within 20 s, and exert up to 50 lb of force occasionally.
