General Statement of JobUnder general supervision, the driver operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation for students. Duties include performing pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations, observing safety standards, maintaining student discipline, completing required reports, securing the bus at the end of each run, and exercising tact and courtesy with parents, guardians, and school personnel.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities• Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections as required by Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
• Report mechanical defects to the Zone Transportation Supervisor, Routing Specialist, onsite mechanic, or control center.
• Operate the assigned bus on the provided route(s) and schedule.
• Communicate any changes to the route, stop locations, or schedule resulting from school principal updates.
• Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations, including rapid evacuation procedures in emergencies.
• Refer to the Handbook for the School Bus Driver and Safety Assistant as needed.
• Maintain student discipline and enforce a progressive discipline plan aligned with school policies.
• Report undisciplined students to the principal and transport only authorized students.
• Keep the bus clean and free of hazardous items.
• Report all accidents per Operating Instructions, stay at the scene until released.
• Complete personal time cards and required reports, including accident or incident reports.
• Secure the bus by parking correctly, inspecting for damage, and locking all windows and doors.
• Maintain positive relationships with parents, guardians, and school personnel.
High school graduation and experience driving large vehicles, preferably in transportation of students. Equivalent training or experience may also be considered.
Special RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job FunctionsPhysical requirements:
Ability to decelerate, apply brakes, steer, and assist passengers quickly; can exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
Data conception, interpersonal communication, language ability, intelligence, verbal and numerical aptitude, form/spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, color discrimination, interpersonal temperament, and physical communication skills as described in the original listing.
Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of safe and efficient bus operations.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and bus regulations.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and Department Operating Instructions.
• Ability to inspect the bus, detect mechanical issues, and maintain discipline and cleanliness.
• Ability to complete necessary reports and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, courtesy, and effective working relationships.
