Custodian/Bus Driver – 10 Month Contract at Maiden Elementary
Job Summary
Under limited supervision, the Head Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining facilities and supervising a small team of custodians. The Bus Driver, under general supervision, operates the school bus, ensuring safe transport of students and maintaining vehicle cleanliness.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesHead Custodian
- Assign tasks and demonstrate work procedures to custodians.
- Oversee, observe, and improve custodians’ work.
- Maintain and repair heating and air‑conditioning equipment.
- Move equipment and supplies; make minor furniture and facility repairs.
- Wash windows, woodwork, walls; clean and polish floors.
- Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; empty wastebaskets.
- Lock and unlock doors; maintain adequate supplies.
- Keep records of work schedules and assignments.
- Report damages or needed repairs to supervisors.
Bus Driver
- Drive the bus safely to destinations and return.
- Conduct vehicle pre‑checks, record and report malfunctions.
- Follow district routes, picking up and dropping off students at designated stops.
- Ensure all students exit only at their correct stops.
- Monitor student behavior, handling incidents and reporting concerns.
- Maintain bus cleanliness and safety standards.
Head Custodian
:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; custodial work experience and supervisory experience preferred.
Bus Driver
:
Five years of responsible driving experience; completion of North Carolina DMV bus driver training; DOT physical exam and negative drug screen; eligible for a Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement.
Physical Requirements
- Operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, and small hand tools.
- Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
- Perform medium to heavy physical work for extended periods.
Interpersonal Communication
- Speak and signal to convey information; give instructions and directions.
Language Ability
- Read simple forms; prepare timesheets and requisitions.
Other Requirements
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license and school bus driver’s license.
Head Custodian
- Knowledge of custodial methods, materials, equipment, safety precautions, hazardous waste handling, and cleaning procedures.
- Follow a written schedule and perform medium to heavy physical work.
- Exercise independent judgment, establish relationships, and keep simple records.
- Operate heating and air‑conditioning equipment and small cleaning tools.
Bus Driver
- Knowledge of driving laws, safe bus operations, vehicle pre‑run checks.
- Maintain records of student names, stop locations and times, route information, and timesheets.
- Implement policies on student transportation, enforce conduct rules.
- Communicate with students, parents, and transportation department.
- Lead to maintain discipline; keep bus clean; detect mechanical issues; plan seating.
