Position: Transportation Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

Reports to: Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services

Terms of Employment: 12 months, full time;
Participation in a rotating on-call schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and other times outside the regular workday, as operational needs require.

The Transportation Fleet Maintenance Supervisor provides hands- on leadership for the district's transportation maintenance shop and vehicle fleet. The employee plans, prioritizes, assigns, performs, and documents preventive maintenance and repairs; supervises assigned shop personnel; maintains parts, fuel, mileage, and repair records; and helps ensure that school buses and other district vehicles are safe, reliable, compliant, and ready for service. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services and in close coordination with the Director of Student Transportation Services.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional technical education or recognized automotive/diesel credentials preferred. Considerable experience in automotive, diesel, heavy-equipment, or school-bus maintenance and repair; supervisory or lead-mechanic experience preferred.
  • Must possess, or obtain within the timeframe established by the district, a valid Class A commercial driver's license with tanker and school bus endorsements and all other credentials required for assigned duties.
  • Must meet applicable North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Department of Motor Vehicles, and district requirements for school-bus maintenance and inspection responsibilities.
  • Must maintain a driving record and physical ability sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, organizes, prioritizes, assigns, and monitors the daily work of the transportation maintenance shop.
  • Supervises, supports, and evaluates assigned mechanics and shop personnel in accordance with district procedures; identifies training needs and promotes safe, efficient work practices.
  • Develops and implements procedures and work plans for preventive maintenance, inspections, vehicle service, and repair.
  • Performs and oversees diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of school buses and other district vehicles, including engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, cooling, fuel, and related systems.
  • Ensures required preventive maintenance, safety inspections, recalls, and repairs are completed accurately and on schedule in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Coordinates vehicle availability and repair priorities with the Director of Student Transportation Services so that route coverage and student transportation needs are supported.
  • Assesses out-of-service vehicles, roadside breakdowns, and urgent repair needs; assigns resources and communicates expected return-to-service times.
  • Participates in a rotating on-call schedule with other assigned transportation maintenance personnel and responds to after-hours bus breakdowns, mechanical failures, safety concerns, and other fleet emergencies as assigned.
