Charleston County is seeking an experienced and detail driven financial leader to serve as the Assistant Budget Director – Budget Management. In this key leadership role, you will help guide the County’s budget strategy, support long term financial planning, and ensure responsible stewardship of public funds. You will work closely with the Budget Director, collaborate with County departments, and oversee a team of analysts who support one of the most important financial functions in local government.
WhatYou’ll Do Lead and Support Budget Strategy
- Assist in developing, monitoring, and managing County operating budgets and long-term financial plans.
- Build and analyze revenue projections, salary models, and capital funding plans.
- Coordinate creation of proposed and approved annual budget documents.
- Serve as Acting Budget Director when needed.
- Supervise Budget Analysts and support hiring, training, evaluations, and workforce development.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Review complex budget reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Analyze financial data to strengthen internal controls and improve decision-making.
- Support disaster-related financial reporting and FEMA reimbursement processes.
- Provide clear, helpful financial guidance to employees, leadership, elected officials, and the public.
- Represent the department at meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
- Help maintain strong cross department relationships and advance process improvements.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field
- 7+ years progressive governmental budgeting or financial experience
- 3+ years supervising five or more employees (within the last 15 years)
- Strong knowledge of governmental financial systems, GAAP, GASB standards, and budgeting principles
- Ability to interpret complex data and communicate financial concepts clearly to non finance audiences
- Solid skills in computer applications, presentations, and performance management
- Valid SC driver's license (or obtained within 3 months)
Preferred: CPA, Government Finance Officer certification, or advanced credentials with 5+ years of experience.
Working Environment- Standard office setting with typical business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM)

- Must reside in South Carolina
