Position: Office of Support Services (OSS) Sergeant - (60023898)

THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (SCDPS) OFFICERS ONLY.

Processes and transports all evidence in assigned regions of state for SCDPS Divisions to include travel to all assigned Posts within given Troop(s) assigned by Central Evidence Facility (CEF) Commander. Assists with evidence custodian duties at the CEF in Columbia as needed. Responsible for the coordination of all quarterly, unannounced, and annual inspections/audits within assigned area of responsibility. Conducts quality control checks of the electronic evidence tracking system and prepare all collected evidence for transport to SLED Lab, to include iLab prelog submissions.

Collects and processes all evidence at post locations within assigned regions/areas for all SCDPS Divisions. Ensures accuracy of all required documents. Maintains inventory for all areas of responsibility within assigned Divisions/Troops/Regions. Conducts evidence training for all new Field Evidence Custodians and troopers/officers upon request. Monitors Smart Cop/Mark
43 evidence modules for issues/concerns. Assist with audits, administrative duties, or any additional duties assigned by the CEF Lieutenant or the CEF Commander.

Supervises CEF operations in the assigned locations and holds responsibility for the inventory at the CEF Satellite locations. Coordinates quarterly, unannounced, and annual audits ensuring proper documentation and maintenance. Responsible for coordinating monthly property and evidence destruction ensuring proper documentation and maintenance. Supervises subordinate employees and testifies in court when called to do so.

Conducts quality control checks of the electronic evidence tracking system and reports any errors to the CEF Supervisor. Maintains the CEF Compliance Report and provides corrective training with respective custodians as required. Returns weapons to outside agencies within assigned troops/regions as required.

Assists the CEF Supervisor with gathering training material and instructing classes on evidence/asset forfeiture policy, procedures, and function within assigned areas of responsibility.

RESIDENCY

– Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within four (4) months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. Law enforcement personnel assigned to the OSS CEF shall establish a residence within Richland County or at a location that will allow them to respond to Richland County within 60 minutes.

Troop/Region/Division/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

MINIMUM AGENCY REQUIREMENTS
  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • Must be certified as a South Carolina Class I Law Enforcement Officer and eligible eligible (with applicable training and experience) to be classified as a Law Enforcement Officer IV (Sergeant) with the SC Department of Public Safety.
  • Must have served six (6) years in law enforcement within any SCDPS law enforcement division, or have experience, knowledge and rank comparable to that of an SCDPS Sergeant from another SC law enforcement agency.
  • Be experienced in using the electronic evidence tracking systems and reports.
  • Employee must be able to effectively supervise personnel with sound decision making abilities.
  • Must be capable of acting in the absence of the Central Evidence Supervisor.
  • Driving in state is required.
  • Ability to lift upwards of 50lbs. required.
  • Overnight, after-hours, and weekend work may be required.
  • Must be able to respond in a law enforcement capacity to critical incidents when called upon or to critical situations deemed necessary by supervision.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Central Evidence Facility Lieutenant, and under general supervision of the Central Evidence Facility Commander.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office and warehouse environment.
