Highway Patrol Sergeant; Promotion; Troop , ACE Mid-State Motor Unit Coordinator

THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL (SCHP) OFFICERS ONLY.

This position serves Statewide Operations.

Patrols South Carolina (SC) roads and highways, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws as a member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) Motorcycle Unit. Schedules and coordinates all statewide Motor Unit Training. Supervises officers in the performance of their duties. Investigates traffic collisions and enforces state and federal criminal laws, providing specialized services of the Motor Unit.

Trains and instructs other officers in proper motorcycle enforcement operations and in the proper care and use of issued equipment. Plans and schedules Motor Unit training for other officers. Keeps abreast of motorcycle skills and equipment. Maintains required Motor Unit and instructor certifications. Supervises officers in the performance of their duties, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures.

Prepares employee schedules and delegates work assignments for shift rotations, to include adjustments for training and special assignments.

Patrols South Carolina highways and conducts law enforcement activities.

Ensures that troopers follow standard operating procedures in performance of duties.

Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with the general public and sound working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, courts, and South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) personnel.

Maintains required law enforcement certifications and current knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations governing SCHP law enforcement operations.

Conducts employee performance reviews and counseling in a fair and impartial manner.

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

TIME IN GRADE – The candidate must possess a minimum of six (6) months of continuous service as a SCHP Corporal by the closing date of this vacancy.

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a Promotional Examination for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.

PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL – An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process. Any individual who has been involuntarily demoted during the preceding six (6) months of the vacancy closing shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Performance Improvement Plan” (PIP), formerly known as a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance,” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of this vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within four (4) months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. SCDPS Policy #300.47 Section IV.
