Summary
National Power is accepting applications to fill a Generator Service Technician opening in our North Charleston, SC market. Under the general direction of and reporting to the CISV Service Manager, the Generator Service Technician is responsible for maintenance and repair of generator sets and other electrical equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform various types and levels of maintenance and repair on generators and parallel systems ranging from 5‑5000 kW, including troubleshooting and repair of Automatic Transfer Switches (bypass isolation, closed transition types). Perform preventative maintenance service (oil and filters), troubleshoot AC and DC circuits, remove and replace components as necessary, perform warranty work per manufacturer’s guidelines, and commission new generators and systems.
- Perform diesel or gaseous engine troubleshooting and repair, including ignition components, injection systems, valve adjustments, and related systems.
- Perform load‑bank testing on generators to ensure units meet operational conditions and applicable code requirements.
- Assist other technicians with large multi‑person jobs or troubleshooting complicated issues.
- HS diploma required; associate degree in an electrical/mechanical related field preferred.
- Current Generac Power Systems certification preferred.
- Previous experience as a US Air Force Electrical Power Production Specialist, US Navy Electrician’s Mate, or Generator and/or UPS field service technician preferred.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to provide verbal/written reports of job status, repair recommendations, equipment/supplies needed.
- Ability to account for time spent on jobs and travel.
- Excellent driving record and valid driver’s license; job requires long‑distance driving and overnight stays; company covers hotel costs and provides a meal allowance.
- Good computer skills; comfortable with Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF.
- Must maintain vehicle, inventory parts, and secure company property (cell phone, laptop, tools).
- Ability to manage difficult or emotional customer situations, respond promptly to customer needs, solicit feedback, meet commitments.
- Strong problem‑solving skills during emergencies or limited‑resource situations.
- Training will be provided; may be required to attend training courses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and elsewhere.
- Displays accuracy, thoroughness, continuous improvement, and safety awareness.
- May be required to work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.).
- Frequent work near moving mechanical parts.
- Lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 75 lbs.
- Ascending or descending ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps.
- Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hands.
- Entering text or data into a computer with a keyboard.
- Pushing or pulling tasks may involve feet and/or arms.
- Moving around on hands and knees or hands and feet to enter restricted or confined spaces.
- Operating controls on machinery (pedals, buttons, levers, cranks).
- Clarity of vision required for small objects or reading small print, including computer use.
- Sitting for long periods may be required.
- Competitive pay based on experience and certifications; overtime paid at 1.5 X base, performance‑based company.
