Position: Highway Maintenance Worker IV: Crew Foreman (61035258)

Job Overview

Supervises Highway Maintenance Workers involved in a variety of maintenance activities including sign maintenance, thermoplastic, and pavement markings to preserve state maintained roads and bridges in Charleston County. Responsible for sign inventory, stock room, and sign requisitions. Reviews work request and schedules necessary work. Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly reports, time sheets, and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures;

rates employees yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System. Performs or assists in all additional requests or tasks assigned by direct supervisor(s) within the state chain of command. This includes, but is not limited to, Hurricane /Snow and Ice Plans, Customer Services, On-Call, Traffic Control, Spill Response and Emergency Work or Support. Assist in meeting the unit’s Annual Business Plan goals.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirements

Physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.

Works 40 hours per week under normal conditions. Works outside in heavy traffic and all weather conditions. Subject to dust, excessive noise and traffic hazards for a period of time. Requires lifting, standing, stooping, bending and physical strain. Work overtime as necessary.
