Position: BUS OPERATOR - NO RUN ASSIGNED

KANAWHA COUNTY SCHOOLS – Terminal Bus Operator – No Run Assigned

Immediate Supervisor: Bus Terminal Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Employment Term: Minimum 200 days annually

Salary: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Scale, Pay Grade D3 commensurate with experience and education level.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Bus Terminal Supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel.

Job Summary: Responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school by maintaining an orderly and disciplined bus environment, reporting misconduct, rule violation or mechanical problems to the principal or bus terminal supervisor. This position is not assigned a route but may be assigned any regular run by the terminal supervisor. Bus drivers are generally assigned to an eight‑hour day.

General Performance Requirements and Responsibilities: Employees must comply with all Kanawha County Schools Policies and Procedures, maintain regular attendance, complete all required training, and follow all safety rules. Bus Operators are expected to perform all duties outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336.

Performance Responsibilities (Essential

Job Duties )
  • Transport students safely to and from school daily, and act as the Supervisor for all students in custody and control.
  • Perform pre/post‑trip inspections to ensure the equipment is properly maintained and safe.
  • Learn routes, including pick‑up and drop‑off locations.
  • Assist and supervise students with disabilities.
  • Communicate with students, parents, school officials and supervisors.
  • Install snow chains on the bus when required.
  • Secure a wheelchair.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the bus, including daily sweeping and weekly washing of the interior and exterior.
  • Report the names and addresses of students riding the bus to supervisors and prepare a seating chart.
  • Prepare a monthly report for the Executive Director of Transportation summarizing mileage, maintenance, extracurricular trips, fuel and oil consumption, and passengers transported.
  • Maintain safety equipment (wheelchair hook‑ups, safety vests, lifts, car seats, etc.) and ensure restraints are properly used.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; criminal background check pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b.
  • Demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state‑approved competency test) as required.
  • Valid CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements and a good driving record.
  • No physical handicap that would impair driving ability.
  • Valid driver's license; maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • At least three years of driving experience as a licensed operator of any vehicle.
  • Successfully complete WV School Bus Safety Program and pass requisite online and skills tests.
  • Ability to climb in and out of the bus to check the engine compartment.
  • Pass a physical examination from a Medical Examiner as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and a drug and alcohol screen.
  • Meet all requirements outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336.
  • Previous bus operator experience with medium to heavy vehicles on public highways during peak traffic hours is preferred.
Physical Demands

Frequent stooping, reaching overhead and shoulder height, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, speaking, hearing, seeing, using interior and exterior rear‑view mirrors, and repetitive motions. Frequently lift and/or move at least 50 pounds of materials or children. Specific vision abilities include distance vision to read road signs and detect hazards, near vision to monitor instruments and student passengers, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work

Environment

Exposure to extreme temperatures ranging from below freezing to up to 80°F during warmer months. Bus operators work a split‑shift schedule with a five‑day workweek, typically beginning early in the morning and ending late in the afternoon, with time off in between runs. The job involves driving through heavy traffic and interacting with passengers, making it potentially stressful and fatiguing.
