Abb Vie's Genomics Research Center (GRC) is part of the Quantitative Medicine and Genomics (QM&G) functional area that promotes data-driven innovation in drug discovery by integrating diverse quantitative data and leveraging advanced computational models. The GRCs goal is to develop world class genetics and genomics research focused on finding the right therapeutic targets and helping Abb Vie scientists better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior and response to our drugs in clinical trials across all therapeutic areas.

Join our innovative Genomic Technologies (GTECH) lab team, where we are at the forefront of genomic research and discovery. Our team is dedicated to advancing science through cutting-edge technologies and collaborative efforts. We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Automation Engineer to join our diverse team of scientists. The Automation Engineer is responsible for independently planning, coordinating, developing, and implementing automation projects in a high quality and timely manner to support automation-based workflows, along with providing insight for new system design or improvement across functional areas within the team.

This includes wet lab testing for feasibility, verification and validation of lab automation, workflows and software.

This role involves programming, maintaining and incorporating automated systems into cell culture workflows, including phenotypic screening approaches. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent communication skills and operate in a fast-paced setting to support our dynamic environment and drive operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Independently plan, coordinate, develop activities for the implementation of new automation projects/processes or support existing ones using internal teams and external providers.

Investigate new technologies and identify measures to increase process/workflow efficiency or quality by use of automation. Proactively communicate corresponding proposals to leadership.

Independently program or supervise the programming at the automation providers, test, and validate new methods/optimize existing scripts, and communicate with end-users/teams to understand their requirements and accepted benchmarks.

Independently support implemented automation solutions through technical or programming troubleshooting and problem solving.

Conduct laboratory evaluations to identify process bottlenecks and new automation opportunities.

Provide or maintain detailed documentation and key performance indicators using suitable IT tools. Build and maintain a strong network of automation Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from different Abb Vie sites and establish bridges to system vendors.

Train automation platform SMEs and users (if not covered by platform SMEs). Support scientists with troubleshooting and running methods.

Collaborate and regularly communicate with team leads and group leader (e.g., function Leadership Team or its representative, system owner, and SMEs) about structured project updates and activity progress against desired timelines and possible delays.

Provide a comprehensive and independent communication of new projects to the team working groups by means of e.g., internal newsletters, Share Points, and other communication channels.

System Management & SOPs:
Participate in LIMS-related activities to enhance development of lab workflows. Organize, update, and maintain SOPs, conducting reviews with lab members.
