Job Description

We are seeking an Associate Scientist II to join our Drug Metabolism and Disposition team within the Quantitative Translation and ADME Sciences organization in Development Sciences at Abb Vie Pharmaceuticals. This position offers the opportunity to work on in vitro and in vivo biotransformation studies, leveraging cutting‑edge analytical technologies and workflows to solve problems, advance our pipeline and drive pharmaceutical innovation.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a desire to learn, grow and create solutions that accelerate drug discovery and improve patient outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine tasks competently and independently, generating reliable and consistent results.
  • Work in a high‑functioning analytical laboratory.
  • Perform in‑vitro assays and routinely work with radio‑labeled compounds.
  • Optimize procedures and protocols to enhance productivity and efficiency with input from a senior scientist.
  • Prepare samples for analysis (LC, MS, scintillation).
  • Operate LC and MS instruments to collect data for Discovery and Development studies across multiple vendor platforms (Thermo, Sciex).
  • Learn and understand new experimental techniques.
  • Appropriately modify protocols to suit changing research needs.
  • Build theoretical and practical knowledge to carry out job functions.
  • Place data in proper scientific context by consulting and citing relevant literature.
  • Impact projects predominantly through lab‑based activities.
  • Demonstrate proficiency by learning multiple experimental techniques.
  • Have a general understanding of drug metabolism and disposition in drug discovery and development.
  • Maintain accurate and current records of research according to Abb Vie policies.
  • Present data clearly and thoroughly in one‑on‑one and group meetings with clear graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Provide written summary reports as appropriate.
  • Communicate group objectives outside of the Drug Metabolism and Disposition team.
  • Learn and share knowledge with colleagues and participate in internal and external presentation opportunities.
  • Document experimental activities and results in a GMP‑compliant manner using an electronic data acquisition and management system.
  • Analyze and critique results, noting significant deviations from expected results.
  • Troubleshoot experiments and instrumentation.
  • Apply new experimental techniques to unique project or assignment requirements.
  • Modify protocols to suit changing needs of research or development sciences.
  • Adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, and GxP compliance where applicable.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent education, with typically 3 or more years of experience, or a Master’s degree (no additional experience required).
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in chromatography and/or mass spectrometry.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
