R&D Technician
Job Description
The R&D Technician supports non-clinical laboratory studies by working closely with Study Directors, Toxicologists, Clinical Veterinarians, and Study Pathologists to execute study protocols and standard operating procedures. This role involves hands-on work with laboratory animals, operation of laboratory equipment, and precise collection and documentation of study data. The technician contributes to both in-life and terminal phases of studies, ensuring high standards of quality, regulatory compliance, and timeliness.
Responsibilities
+ Conduct in-life phases of non-clinical laboratory studies, including routine animal health evaluations and observations for normal or changed physical conditions.
+ Administer test compounds to animals according to study protocols, dosing schedules, and standard operating procedures.
+ Perform weight measurements and collect body fluid samples for clinical evaluation, ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and documentation.
+ Execute terminal phases of studies, including performing necropsies and making gross pathologic observations and descriptions as directed.
+ Prepare test compound formulations in accordance with study protocols, SOPs, and applicable guidelines.
+ Record, maintain, and verify all study data with precision, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and compliance with GLP and other regulatory standards.
+ Handle non-clinical test systems and operate laboratory equipment safely and proficiently.
+ Support general study work such as coordinating daily tasks, assisting with study setup, and ensuring required materials and equipment are available.
+ Participate in training on new techniques and apply special technical procedures as business needs require.
+ Assist with group administrative responsibilities and laboratory coordination, contributing to efficient workflow and organization.
+ Comply with all applicable guidelines and policies, including SOPs, GLP requirements, DEA policies, protocols, and directives from Study Directors and management.
+ Work comfortably with laboratory animals, including procedures that may involve euthanasia, following ethical and regulatory standards.
+ Manage time effectively to meet study timelines and support multiple ongoing projects.
+ Collaborate in a team environment, communicating clearly with colleagues and contributing to a positive, cooperative group setting.
Essential Skills
+ Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience in a laboratory setting, or an associate's degree with no experience required.
+ Sufficient technical experience and training to execute non-clinical laboratory studies according to standard operating procedures and study protocols.
+ Proficiency in handling non-clinical test systems and working comfortably with laboratory animals, including euthanasia procedures.
+ Ability to operate and understand common laboratory equipment used in non-clinical studies.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills to document observations and study data clearly and accurately.
+ High level of precision in the collection, recording, and maintenance of data for non-clinical laboratory studies.
+ Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time during laboratory and animal care activities.
+ Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet study timelines.
+ Attention to detail in following protocols, documenting findings, and maintaining compliance.
+ Motivation and reliability to work consistently and support study activities in a fast-paced environment.

Skills & Qualifications
+ Associate's degree or higher in a relevant field is acceptable with no prior experience required; prior laboratory experience is considered a plus.
+ Experience in animal care, R&D, or laboratory environments is beneficial but not mandatory.
+ Familiarity with non-clinical laboratory studies and related regulatory frameworks such as GLP and DEA policies is advantageous.
+ Comfort working in a structured, protocol-driven environment with clear quality and compliance expectations.
+ Ability to work well in a team setting, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work culture.
Work Environment
This role is based 100% onsite in a laboratory and animal facility environment in Lake County, IL, working within a team-oriented setting where collaboration and clear communication are essential. The R&D Technician works closely with scientific and veterinary staff, handling laboratory animals and operating standard laboratory equipment in compliance with SOPs, GLP guidelines, and DEA policies. The typical work schedule is from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with some overtime offered or required on weekdays or weekends depending on study demands.
